THE ROLE

The Heavy Equipment Operator III position is a full-time, hourly position and located in Lost Hills. Heavy equipment may include excavators, front-end loaders, dozers, scrapers and other pieces of equipment. This role requires a high level of skill, experience, and expertise to handle various types of equipment with precision, and to complete advanced tasks such as complex grading, site preparation, and heavy lifting. Advanced Operators are often responsible for leading teams, mentoring junior operators (Operator I’s and II’s), and ensuring that machinery is functioning at optimal levels. They play a key role in the success of large-scale projects and ensure that safety and efficiency standards are consistently met.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Operate a wide range of heavy equipment, including but not limited to excavators, scrapers, front-end loaders, and specialized machinery such as haul trucks, dozers and fire protection equipment
  • Perform high-level tasks such as precise grading, trenching, land leveling, and complex excavations in alignment with project plans, specifications, and safety standards
  • Lead and supervise smaller teams of operators, providing guidance and training to ensure smooth operations and adherence to safety practices
  • Troubleshoot and perform preventative maintenance on machinery, including checking fluid levels, inspecting for wear and tear, and ensuring proper operation. Coordinate major repairs with maintenance personnel as needed
  • Operate equipment in challenging conditions such as rough terrain, extreme weather, or congested work environments, ensuring maximum efficiency and safety
  • Coordinate closely with project managers, engineers, and other key personnel to ensure project timelines, budgets, and quality standards are met
  • Review blueprints, technical drawings, and project specifications to ensure proper machine setup and to make adjustments as necessary during operations.
  • Perform heavy lifting and material handling tasks as required, utilizing specialized equipment such as cranes or forklifts
  • Maintain accurate logs of machine hours, materials moved, and daily tasks, ensuring all necessary documentation is completed
  • Ensure all safety standards, environmental regulations, and company policies are followed during machine operation and job site activities
  • Lead by example in promoting a culture of safety and efficiency, actively identifying and mitigating potential hazards on the job site
  • Perform other related duties

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience operating heavy equipment in a large scale, industrial environment
  • Expertise in operating a variety of heavy equipment, including advanced machinery like cranes, graders, and specialized earth-moving equipment
  • Strong understanding of construction and site preparation techniques, equipment specifications, and project management principles
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex tasks with precision and attention to detail
  • Exceptional knowledge of safety procedures and the ability to enforce safety practices among team members
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to coordinate with team members and other departments effectively
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents, blueprints, and project plans

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Environmental conditions – must work outside in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat. The operator may at times be exposed to dangerous and/or toxic substances and must take necessary precautions to protect eyes, nose and skin from irritation and infection
  • Mental demands- conditions that may lead to mental or emotional fatigue. This position entails working independently and maintaining a schedule of work.  Any problems or inconveniences may result in increased stress to complete tasks in a limited time
  • Occasionally lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling 25 to 50 pounds
  • Climb on and around equipment and sit for long periods while operating equipment
  • Walk and stand for long periods of time
  • Able to climb a minimum of 2 story of stairs
