THE ROLE
This is a full time, non-exempt position that will be responsible for diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems on a wide range of heavy machinery and equipment. This position requires expert-level knowledge of heavy equipment, the ability to troubleshoot and resolve advanced issues, and the capability to lead and manage repair projects. Mechanic III’s are expected to handle the most intricate and high-stakes repairs while ensuring equipment is operating at peak performance.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
- Perform advanced diagnostics and repairs on all types of heavy machinery, including engines, hydraulic systems, powertrains, and electrical/electronic systems using state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and techniques
- Overhaul and rebuild major engine and component systems, including transmissions, axles, and hydraulic pumps and motors, ensuring equipment meets or exceeds manufacturer specifications
- Troubleshoot and repair complex electrical and computerized control systems using diagnostic software and tools to identify faults in sensors, wiring, and electronic control units (ECUs)
- Lead and manage large-scale repair projects, coordinating with other mechanics, technicians, and supervisors to ensure work is completed efficiently and safely
- Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on heavy equipment to prevent costly repairs and reduce unscheduled downtime, including regular system checks, fluid analysis, and component replacements
- Maintain detailed maintenance records for all equipment, including repair history, part usage, and future service needs, ensuring compliance with company standards and regulations
- Train and mentor Mechanic I’s and II’s, sharing advanced knowledge and repair techniques to help them develop their skills and improve team performance
- Collaborate with equipment operators and supervisors to identify recurring issues and implement long-term solutions to improve machine reliability
- Stay up-to-date with industry advancements, including new equipment models, technology, and repair techniques, to maintain the highest level of expertise
- Ensure all safety and environmental regulations are adhered to while conducting repairs, including the use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and following proper disposal protocols for hazardous materials
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting guidance to other team members when needed, assisting with more complex mechanical challenges
- Other duties as assigned
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent; advanced technical certifications are preferred
- 5+ years of experience in heavy equipment mechanics, with extensive experience diagnosing and repairing complex machinery
- Expertise in mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems found in heavy equipment
- Proficiency with computerized diagnostic systems and specialized tools for troubleshooting and repair
- Strong leadership and project management abilities, with experience overseeing repair teams and managing large equipment repairs
- In-depth knowledge of preventive and predictive maintenance strategies
- Ability to read and interpret complex technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, for reporting issues, interacting with operators, and documenting work performed
- Ability to mentor and train junior staff members effectively
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and handle high-pressure situations when needed
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Environmental conditions – Must work outside in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat. May at times be exposed to dangerous and/or toxic substances and must take necessary precautions to protect eyes, nose and skin from irritation and infection
- Mental demands- Conditions that may lead to mental or emotional fatigue
- Occasionally lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling 25 to 50 pounds
- Climb on and around equipment and sit for long periods while operating equipment
- Walk and stand for long periods of time
- Able to climb a minimum of 2 story of stairs
