THE ROLE
This is a full time, non-exempt position that will be responsible for operating, maintain and troubleshooting water treatment and/or distribution systems. This role is crucial in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our water facilities, in compliance with state and federal regulations.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
- Operate and monitor water treatment and distribution equipment, including pumps, valves, filters, chemical feeders, and other related systems
- Perform routine inspections and maintenance on all equipment to ensure proper functioning
- Adjust treatment processes as necessary to maintain compliance with water quality standards
- Collect water samples for laboratory analysis and conduct on-site water quality testing
- Interpret test results and make necessary adjustments to the treatment process to ensure compliance with regulatory standards
- Maintain accurate records of water quality data and operational activities
- Ensure all operations comply with local, state, and federal regulations, including the Safe Drinking Water Act and California Department of Public Health guidelines
- Prepare and submit required reports to regulatory agencies in a timely manner
- Identify, diagnose, and resolve operational issues in the treatment and distribution systems
- Respond to emergencies and alarms, taking corrective action as needed to maintain system integrity and safety
- Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures, ensuring a safe work environment for all staff
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities to stay current with industry practices and regulations
- Train and mentor junior staff and new hires in water treatment operations and safety procedures
- Other job duties as assigned
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED required; associate degree in water treatment technology or a related field preferred
- Valid California Water Treatment Operator Certification (T1-T5) and/or Distribution Operator Certification (D1-D5) required
- Additional certifications in specialized treatment processes are a plus
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in water treatment and/or distribution operations
- Experience with SCADA systems and other automated control systems is preferred
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software applications
- Ability to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends and holidays, as needed
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Environmental conditions – Must work outside in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat. May at times be exposed to dangerous and/or toxic substances and must take necessary precautions to protect eyes, nose and skin from irritation and infection.
- Mental demands- Conditions that may lead to mental or emotional fatigue.
- Occasionally lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling 25 to 50 pounds.
- Climb on and around equipment and sit for long periods while operating equipment.
- Walk and stand for long periods of time.
- Able to climb a minimum of 2 story of stairs
