THE ROLE
This is a full-time, non-exempt, entry level position focused on basic maintenance, simple repairs and learning to troubleshoot under supervision. It serves as a foundation for progressing to more complex tasks in the role.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
- Assist senior mechanics in performing maintenance and repairs on heavy machinery including industrial, large-scale equipment related to metals recovery facility like cranes and overhead hoists, load test machines, pumps and electric motors, and hydraulic rams
- Perform basic preventative maintenance tasks, such as checking oil levels, lubricating parts and replacing simple components
- Support with disassembly and reassembly of machinery and components for repairs or replacement of worn parts
- Assist in the inspection of equipment to identify problems such as leaks, worn parts, and other mechanical failures
- Learn to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics to understand equipment specifications
- Communicate effectively with supervisor to report findings and progress on repair tasks
- Participate in on-the-job training to improve knowledge and mechanical skills under the supervision of experienced mechanics
- Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition, following safety regulations
- Other duties as assigned
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent (technical training or certification is a plus).
- Basic knowledge of mechanical systems, tools and equipment
- Ability to work with hand tools, diagnostic equipment and machinery safely
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Good communication and attention to detail
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Environmental conditions – Must work outside in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat. May at times be exposed to dangerous and/or toxic substances and must take necessary precautions to protect eyes, nose and skin from irritation and infection
- Mental demands- Conditions that may lead to mental or emotional fatigue
- Occasionally lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling 25 to 50 pounds
- Climb on and around equipment and sit for long periods while operating equipment
- Walk and stand for long periods of time
- Able to climb a minimum of 2 story of stairs
