Heavy Equipment Operator I – Landfill
The Heavy Equipment Operator position is a full-time, hourly position and is located at our landfill in Lost Hills. Heavy equipment may include excavators, dozers, front-end loaders, scrapers and other pieces of equipment.
Essential Job Requirements
- Operate heavy equipment in a safe and effective manner in order to minimize the risk of injury, property damage or fatalities
- Perform daily safety and maintenance checks
- Clean heavy equipment as scheduled and/or required
- Ensure heavy equipment is safely and securely stored
- Advise the Superintendent of any requirements for maintenance or repairs
- Participate in routine maintenance
- Practice workplace safety
- Perform other related duties
Working Conditions and Essential Physical Requirements
- Environmental conditions – The Heavy Equipment Operator must work outside in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat. The operator may at times be exposed to dangerous and/or toxic substances and must take necessary precautions to protect eyes, nose and skin from irritation and infection.
- Mental demands- Conditions that may lead to mental or emotional fatigue. This position entails working independently and maintaining a schedule of work. Any problems or inconveniences may result in increased stress to complete tasks in a limited time.
- Occasionally lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling 25 to 50 pounds.
- Climb on and around equipment and sit for long periods while operating equipment.
- Work outside year-round in the different weather conditions and temperatures.
- Lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time.
- Able to climb a minimum of 2 story of stairs
Qualifications, Knowledge & Skills
- years of experience in the following:
- Equipment safety
- Operation of front-end loaders, dozers, excavators, scrapers and other pieces of heavy equipment
- Workplace safety requirements and procedures
- Record keeping system
- Equipment cleaning standards and procedures
- Ability to operate heavy equipment in a safe and responsible manner
- Decision making skills
- Effective verbal and listening communication skills
- Ability to read and write to record pickups and maintain daily records
- Time management
