THE ROLE

This is a full-time, non-exempt, entry level position focused on basic maintenance, simple repairs and learning to troubleshoot under supervision in a metal recycling facility. This role supports plant uptime by assisting senior mechanics and completing preventative maintenance tasks safely and accurately.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Assist senior mechanics in performing maintenance and repairs on industrial, large-scale equipment used in a metals recovery/recycling facility (conveyors, shredders, pumps, electric motors, gearboxes, cranes/overhead hoists, hydraulic systems).
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance tasks such as checking oil/fluid levels, lubricating components, inspecting guards and safety devices, and replacing simple components (filters, belts, hoses, fittings).
  • Support disassembly and reassembly of machinery and components for repair or replacement of worn parts (bearings, couplings, seals, rollers, idlers, wear liners).
  • Assist in equipment inspections to identify leaks, worn parts, misalignment, unusual noise/vibration, and other mechanical failures; report findings.
  • Learn to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and work orders to understand equipment specifications and safe work practices.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisor regarding progress and completion of assigned tasks.
  • Participate in on-the-job training to improve mechanical skills under supervision of experienced mechanics.
  • Maintain work area and tools in clean and orderly condition; follow all safety regulations including PPE and lockout/tagout.
  • Other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent (technical training or certification is a plus).
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical systems, tools and equipment.
  • Ability to work with hand tools, diagnostic equipment and machinery safely.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Good communication and attention to detail.

ADDED BENEFITS (NOT A DEAL BREAKER)

  • Welding/fabrication exposure (MIG, stick, flux-core).
  • Experience in recycling plants, manufacturing, or heavy industrial environments.
  • Hydraulics/pneumatics familiarity or basic electrical troubleshooting exposure.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND REQUIREMENTS

Environmental conditions – Must work outside in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat. May at times be exposed to dangerous and/or toxic substances and must take necessary precautions to protect eyes, nose and skin from irritation and infection.

Mental demands- Conditions that may lead to mental or emotional fatigue.

Occasionally lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling 25 to 50 pounds.

Climb on and around equipment and sit for long periods while operating equipment.

Walk and stand for long periods of time.

Able to climb a minimum of 2 story of stairs.
