THE ROLE
Commercial truck drivers operate tractor-trailers and other large vehicles to transport cargo over various distances. In order to perform this type of work, a person must obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL). They must also obtain special endorsements in order to carry certain types of cargo.
H.M. Holloway’s commercial drivers are primarily pick-up and delivery drivers, which carry goods/product from a transport or origination center and deliver it to a business or private customer. These drivers usually operate in a particular area consistently but will not operate outside of California.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
- Driving is the main responsibility of a commercial truck driver. While some may need to load or unload cargo.
- Keeping a logbook of driving activities to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations governing the rest and work periods for operators.
- Drivers also keep a record of vehicle inspections
- Drivers make sure truck is equipped with safety equipment
- Drivers plan their route according to delivery schedule
- Drivers may be responsible for obtaining signatures from recipients
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Require the mobility to perform vehicle operating duties
- Will have to work in all weather and must be prepared for both extreme heat and cold
- Remain in a seated position for 6-12 hours
- Shovel 15-20 lbs
- Climb ladders in and around trailers
- Fuel vehicles
- Wash truck and trailer
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
A Class A CDL is required to operate any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 lbs. or more, to include a towed vehicle that is HEAVIER than 10,000 lbs. While your towing allowances will depend on which endorsements you obtain, a few of the vehicles you MAY be able to drive with a Class A CDL (with proper endorsements) include:
- Tractor-trailers
- Truck and trailer combinations
- Double and Triple trailers
- Tractor-trailer buses
- Tanker vehicles
- Flatbeds
Other requirements include:
- Must be at least 23 years of age and have two years of experience driving with a CDL (insurance requirement)
- Knowledge of all Logistics equipment including but not limited to: Rocket Launcher, Walking Floors, Lowboy, Flatbed, etc.
- Knowledge of all routes including but not limited to: Carson, Oxnard, Fresno, Moulton Niguel, Sanger, Wasco, Temescal, Valencia, Raisin City, California City, etc.
- Hands on experience with electronic equipment and software (GPS, AVL units, CB etc)
- Ability to drive long hours and travel regularly
- Extensive knowledge of applicable truck driving rules and regulations
- No serious tickets or accidents in the last 5 years
- No DWI/DUI in last 3 years
- Adaptability and foresight to handle unexpected situations (traffic, weather conditions etc.)
- Willing to submit to background/drug checks and provide employment recommendations
- Trucking school diploma
- Valid truck driving license and valid DOT medical clearance
- Responsible for reporting mechanical issues and breakdowns to Logistics Mechanic
- Responsible for knowing current dump locations in landfill
