Reporting to the VP of Product Sales, the Mining Superintendent will be responsible for the safe and efficient coordination of all mining activities in order to meet or exceed mining production objectives. The mine is a conventional open pit operation moving 350,000 to 1,000,000 million tons of material per year.
Responsibilities
- Reviews and develops quarry plans and coordinates activities of personnel engaged in extracting minerals, for example gypsum, silica sand, clay or rock, from surface mines, pits, or quarries: Reviews data, for example maps, survey reports, and geological records, and confers with engineering, maintenance, and supervisory personnel to plan and direct mine development
- Calculates mining or quarrying operational costs, estimates potential income, and instructs Pit Supervisor to abandon or open mine sections, pits, or other working areas
- Studies maps and blueprints to determine location for haul access roads, crusher/milling operations, and conveyor systems
- Studies land contours and rock formations, use of equipment for extracting, separating, and loading minerals
- Reads mining laws and safety regulations, and issues directives to workers to ensure adherence to applicable rules and regulations
- Reviews and consolidates records, for example ore grade, air quality, safety reports, water quality and production records
- Tours and inspects mine to detect and resolve production, equipment maintenance, safety, atmospheric, and personnel problems
- In collaboration with the VP of Product Sales, develop a yearly budget for the assigned area of responsibility.
- Ensure the department works to the highest of standards, all hazards and risks are identified, and corrective and preventative actions are continually put in place to ensure a safe and efficient working environment
- Coordinate the department’s resources – people, equipment, spares, consumables and facilities into a proper mine planning system to achieve the mining equipment utilization and cost management objectives as set out in the yearly budget
- Participate in new idea generation, proposal preparations, general project planning and scheduling by contributing the superintendent’s expertise to ensure a culture of continuous improvement exists within the mining department
- Maintain and update the department’s information system including flash reports to provide accurate and timely information on a daily, weekly and monthly basis
- Ensure the mining employee development objectives are met
Qualifications, Knowledge & Skills
- A degree/diploma in Mining Engineering preferred; equivalent work experience will be considered
- Minimum 7 years operations management experience;
- Thorough knowledge of mining and environmental legislation and best practice
- Ability to manage a large diverse grouping of personnel
- A total team player, results driven and prepared to contribute to the wider mine’s objectives in an energetic and proactive manner
